Dance through the lens
I like working on trailers - the format is both highly constrained and very free. It’s a bite-size project, a miniature - an exciting montage that communicates visually and creates interest, without revealing too much. When making something for a contemporary dance company, I know I can be a little edgy with the shooting style.
In this piece, discarded clothing covers the floor, creating pathways and gathering into piles. Dancers burrow into the colorful scraps, tunnel through shirts and jeans, emerge in layers of polyester and wool. I worked with shallow depth-of-field, using the theater lights to illuminate mountainous landscapes of draped performers, discovering shifting compositions of calico, flannel and print.
